about

The fact that something is difficult must be one more reason to do it (Rainer Maria Rilke)

Sometimes the world appears heavy, empty, meaningless to Urs Vögeli. In his song cycle «Songs For The Low» he tries to find an answer. It is the first time in over 10 years that he is performing his own compositions again.

In the past Vögeli gave laconic musical comments to pop hits with «Ghost Town Trio», he enlarged the trio with singer Joana Aderi and renamed the band «Ghost Town», and recorded the album «No Depression In Heaven», a confrontation with American Folk Roots and their terrible histories.

Now he leaves the distortion pedals at home, and moves in the areas of jazz/chamber music. The song titles are an indication; ‘Blues for the Tired’ is about a taxi driver in New Orleans whom Vögeli met during a trip, who has 3 day jobs to make ends meet. ‘As If’ reflects the social media dazzlers amongst us, and the ‘Song for the Low’ is meant to console those of us who are tired after a disappointment, - or those who simply have a hangover?

For this song-cycle guitarist Urs Vögeli has reactivated his jazz combo ‘flyOut’. In 2009 the band released the album ‘Not all Birds Play Be-Bop’ (meta records 2009). In the new formation, the band plays Vögeli’s compositions, which meander between melody, song-form, and improvisation.
